Intent, Implementation & Impact Report for Physical Education (P.E.)

Intent

Manor Road Primary School believes strongly that physical education forms an important part of the education of each child. We aim to promote the benefits of an active and healthy lifestyle by delivering a fun, broad and balanced curriculum. At Manor Road, we encourage our children to have a strong set of core values when taking part in activity, such as honesty. We want our children to have the motivation and resilience to constantly strive to be better.

We believe that P.E. is about introducing children to the world of sport, which, combined with an enjoyment of exercise, will provide every child with the foundations for a healthy, active lifestyle.

We intend to deliver high-quality teaching and learning opportunities that inspire all children to succeed in physical education and in developing life skills. We want to teach children skills to keep them safe, such as being able to swim.  Additionally, we want to teach children how to cooperate and collaborate with others as part of an effective team whilst understanding fairness and equity of play to embed life-long values.

Implementation

  • P.E. at Manor Road Primary School provides an appropriate level of challenge.
  • There will be a wide-range of sporting activities: invasion games; net and wall games; striking and fielding games; gymnastics; dance; swimming; outdoor and adventurous activities.
  • The long term plan sets out the P.E. units which are to be taught throughout the year and ensures that the requirements of the National Curriculum are fully met.
  • Pupils participate in two high-quality P.E. lessons each week. In addition, children are encouraged to participate in the varied range of extra-curricular activities.
  • Children are invited to attend competitive sporting events within the local area. This is an inclusive approach which endeavours to encourage not only physical development but also mental well-being. These events also develop teamwork and leadership skills and are very much enjoyed by the children. We take part in development festivals, aimed at catering to all children as well as competitions where we aim to do our best.
  • Each year, two children from each class are invited to become Subject Ambassadors for the school. These children work closely with the Subject Leader to ensure that the curriculum is being taught. They also help to gather information about their peers’ perceptions of P.E.
  • Children participate in extra-curricular clubs covering a variety of activities throughout the year. All children, including disadvantaged pupils, are encouraged to participate.
  • Children in Key Stage One have swimming lessons. In addition to this, children in Year 6 also swim in the final half term of the academic year to ensure that as many of them as possible can swim 25m before the end of KS2.
  • In each class, children take part in additional exercise outside of the normal P.E. lessons. These aim to promote the fun of doing exercise. We take part in a range of activities from running around the field to playing games. Sometimes, we use our Trim Trial equipment as well and run around our running track in summer.

Impact

We help to motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. We encourage children to be physically active throughout their lives. We equip our children with the necessary skills to engage with sports and physical activity and help to develop a love for sport. The children will then hopefully grow up to live happy, healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through P.E.
