Y5 – Reading

Although many children by the time they reach Year 5 are choosing their own books and ‘free reading’ as opposed to being on book bands, it is really important that they continue to read at home, as this develops their vocabulary, sentence structures and comprehension skills. Children should be regularly updating their reading logs with comments or activities related to the books that they are reading.

Reading with your child is not only great for their reading development but also encourages them to have a passion for reading and to enjoy books that they might not have chosen before.

Reading logs are a chance for families to discuss what children are currently enjoying reading and to share this in school. Reading logs must be in school every day, as we use them for independent reading, guided reading activities and changing their books in the library.
