Science

Here are the Science Ambassadors 2022-23

Intent:

We want children to find Science fun and to be inspired by all the Science in the world around them. Our aim is for children to see Science in real-life applications and to know that they can aspire to STEM careers when they grow up.

We aim to provide stimulating and challenging, hands-on science experiences that will help every child to secure and extend their scientific knowledge, understanding and vocabulary, as well as promoting their love of learning.

Implementation:

At Manor Road, Science is taught throughout the year in all KS1 and 2 classes in accordance with the National Curriculum.

  • Every year group will build upon the learning from prior year groups therefore developing depth of understanding and progression of skills.
  • Children explore, question, predict, plan, carry out investigations and observations, as well as draw conclusions. Their findings are recorded in a variety of ways, including in graphs, tables, diagrams and photographs.
  • To support their teaching, staff access a range of resources and planning from PLAN assessment and from TAPS (Teacher Assessment in Primary Science), in addition to the Explorify website.
  • Children are encouraged to work scientifically using the PSTT (Primary Science Teaching Trust) enquiry approaches lenses and the enquiry skills lenses.
  • Effective education visits and visitors are planned to enrich and enhance pupils’ learning experiences within the Science curriculum.
  • Cross-curricular links are planned wherever appropriate, with subjects including Maths, English, Geography and Computing.
  • Assessment is carried out before each new unit to check prior knowledge; during units to check understanding and address any possible misconceptions and after each unit of learning.
  • CPD is carried out regularly to ensure high levels of staff knowledge and confidence are maintained.

EYFS

The Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum supports children’s understanding of Science through the planning and teaching of ‘Understanding the World.’ Children find out about objects, materials and living things using all of their senses. They look at similarities, differences, patterns and change. Both the school environment and skilled practitioners foster curiosity and encourage explorative play. Children are motivated to ask questions about why things happen and how things work. Our children are encouraged to use the natural environment around them to explore. They benefit from spending time in our extensive outdoor area, exploring mini-beasts and their habitats, observing the changing seasons, plants and animals. Children regularly participate in cookery and baking sessions which allows them to experience changes in state as ingredients are mixed, heated and cooled.

Science Impact:

The impact of this curriculum design will lead to outstanding progress over time, across key stages, relative to a child’s individual starting point and their progression of skills. Our children are expected to achieve at least age-related expectations for Science.

Through workshops, trips and interactions with experts, our Science curriculum will lead pupils to be enthusiastic Science learners and to understand that science has changed our lives. Children will understand that Science is necessary for our world’s future success and prosperity. We aim to empower our children to understand that they have the capability to influence scientific progress in the world. This is evidenced through pupil voice, children’s work and their passion for science.
