Religious Education

Intent:

At Manor Road, we support pupils’ personal search for meaning as they explore what it means to be human. Our curriculum allows students to study religious and non-religious worldviews as this is essential if they are to be well prepared for life in our increasingly diverse society. We believe that children need to acquire the necessary knowledge and skills to make sense of the complex world in which they live so that they can ‘respect religious and cultural differences and contribute to a cohesive and compassionate society’.

Children at Manor Road are supported in their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development through the teaching and learning of RE. Staff will encourage children to  reflect upon and develop their own views and ideas on religious and spiritual issues, understand and investigate the difference between right and wrong, explore the role of religion in bringing people together with a sense of identity and investigate the ways in which religion is embodied in culture, by exploring the relationships between religions and cultures.

Our curriculum does not intend to lead children into any specific faith but encourages children to ask questions and make sense of the world around them.

We follow the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education 2021 to support our pupils’ personal search for meaning as they explore what it means to be human.

Through our curriculum, we aim to:

provide our pupils with a curriculum that studies religious and non-religious worldviews.

provide children with the necessary knowledge and skills to make sense of the complex world in which they live so that they can ‘respect religious and cultural differences and contribute to a cohesive and compassionate society

to develop our pupils’ understanding of the ways in which beliefs influence people’s behaviour, practices and outlook

support children in articulating clearly and coherently their personal beliefs, ideas, values and experiences so that they can hold balanced and well-informed conversations about religions and worldviews whilst respecting the views of others

engage pupils in enquiring into and exploring questions arising from the study of religion, faith and belief, so as to promote their personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development

Implementation:

Religious Education is taught weekly in each year group following the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus for Religious Education. Staff pay close attention to the Lancashire website to ensure that their planning and resources are up to date and personalised for their cohort. Lessons are planned and delivered in a variety of ways so that all children can participate fully.

Progress in Religious Education is based on the expected outcomes outlined in the Lancashire Agreed Syllabus 2021. These outcomes then form the basis of our school termly assessment system which is used to report to parents at the end of the academic year.

Impact:

Our children will know about and understand a range of religions and worldviews, so that they can describe, explain and analyse beliefs and practices. They recognise the diversity which exists within and between communities and amongst individuals and respond towards these with respect.

Identify, investigate and respond to questions posed, and responses offered by some of the sources of wisdom found in religions and worldviews

Appreciate and appraise the nature, significance and impact of different ways of life and ways of expressing meaning

Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religions and worldviews, so that they can explain reasonably their ideas about how beliefs, practices and forms of expression influence individuals and communities

Express their personal reflections and critical responses to questions and teachings about identity, diversity, meaning and value, including ethical issues

Appreciate and appraise varied dimensions of religion or a worldview
