French

At Manor Road, we use the KAPOW Scheme of Work as a foundation from which to enhance the 2014 National Curriculum for teaching French throughout Key Stage 2.

We understand that  personalised learning leads to higher student engagement, therefore we ensure that our curriculum is tailored to allow all children to be provided with a learning journey that suits their needs and interests.

Our KAPOW scheme of work is planned around children’s skills and areas of interest to ensure that they are provided with valuable learning opportunities that enable them to reach their full potential within the French curriculum.

Intent

Learning a foreign language is an integral part of belonging to a multi-cultural society and provides a valuable insight into other cultures. A high-quality language education should foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable children to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping children to study and work in other countries.

The national curriculum for languages aims to ensure that all pupils:

  • understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources
  • speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation
  • can write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt
  • discover and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in the language studied.

Implementation

At Manor Road Primary School:

Children have weekly lessons in French throughout Key Stage 2, using the resources and units of work from KAPOW, in addition to other resources.

Lessons are delivered to all Key Stage 2 classes by a French language specialist, supported by a French-speaking subject leader. This enables the children to develop early language acquisition skills that facilitate their understanding of the patterns of language and how these differ from, or are similar to, English.

  • Lessons across the Key Stage support the skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing:
  • Children are taught to listen attentively to spoken language and respond, joining in with songs, rhymes and games.
  • Children will develop an appreciation of a variety of stories, songs, poems and rhymes in French that are delivered through the curriculum content.
  • Children will develop the skills to begin to write at greater length for different purposes and audiences, and develop an appreciation of a range of writing in French.

Impact:

  • Children will achieve at least age-related expectations for langauge-learning.
  • Children will become aware that a language has a structure, and that the structure differs from one language to another.
  • Children will progress their understanding of the French language through use of the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing.
  • Children will enrich their language learning by developing an understanding of  French culture.
  • When children leave Manor Road Primary School, they will have the skills and confidence to begin to explore other countries, cultures and languages within a multi-lingual society.
  • Children will also be engaged and prepared to continue language learning at Secondary School.
